“It looks like it has very recently renovated (Fresh paint, new bathroom fixtures and floors.) Shower heads are fantastic, floor is beautiful. Very hot hot water. The beds are long with excellent new foam (?) comfortable matresses. Ian was a pleasure to talk to (particularly about art and food in traveling).”

“Such a great hostel! Clean, beautiful kitchen and bathrooms, and Ian had lots of suggestions for what to do and see around town. It’s in a great location, too – literally right next to Watkins genn state park, a really good vegan ice cream shop, and an extensive bike trail that Ian recommended to us (great birdwatching!). Definitely worth the visit.”
Rebecca, May 2017

“A friend and I were taking an overnight motorcycle trip to the Finger Lakes and wanted to stay somewhere in Watkins Glen without spending a fortune. Never having stayed in a hostel, I wasn’t sure what to expect. The entire stay was great. Check-in was easy, they gave us tips on where to eat and showed us around the building. The room and bathrooms were both clean, and having BeBe(?) the Doberman around was nice. Definitely recommend this place if you need an inexpensive place to stay.”
Mitch, May 2017

“Staying at Emily’s place was a great moment of peace and quiet during some hectic travel. Emily was a great communicator and generous host. She gave me recommendations to places in town which were phenomenal! They are situated just across the street from Watkins Glen park for waterfall hikes. The hostel was run smoothly much like hostel I have experienced in Europe. At first, Emily was worried I wouldn’t want to sleep in a room without a window, but I have never had such restful sleep as I did in that room on the memory foam mattress! I would definitely come again. Thank you!!”
Kendra, May 2017

Gilbert, May 2017

“Super cosy, awesome people and cute dog”
Henrica, June 2017

“This placecwas great. My mother and I stopped in on a road trip. We agreed the place felt more like a DIY bed and breakfast than a hostel. The kitchen was stocked, everything was clean and the man who checked us in was really helpful with local suggestions. Not to mention Watkins Glen state park was almost directly across the street. I heard there were waterfalls, but 1 mile of waterfalls was way beyond. We were very glad we stopped in here on our way.”
Heather, June 2017

“It’s a simple, low-budget room. Everything is in top notch condition though. Clean, easy, friendly. If you’re looking for a low cost place to stay, this is great.”
Ted, June 2017

“The place was comfortable and close to the centre of Watkins Glen. Clean bathrooms, and the bedroom was comfortable, but oddly didn’t have a window (but had an A/C unit). Very accommodating for a later check-in.”

“The Local was a great spot to stay for a solo traveler. I felt safe there and around Watkins Glen. The space (beds, rooms, bathrooms) were all very clean every day. The Local is a quick and easy walk to restaurants, the state park, and other trails. I recommend eating at Graft and running the Catherine Valley Trail!”

“Emily, Ian, and their two dogs were great hosts. They were very friendly and made me feel welcomed. Emily and Ian took the time to look up information for me. The hostel was clean and comfortable, and had everything I needed. The bed mattresses are memory foam, so it was was easy to get a good night’s sleep. Location is great: walking distance to several restaurants and more. The hostel offers great accommodations for a great price. I highly recommend it.”
Melanie, August 2017

“I spent very little time here, just one night, but it was perfect for my needs. I had the smallest room with no window, but it didn’t bother me as I basically just needed a place to sleep. But the room was nice and clean, the bed comfy. The bathroom across the hall was big and clean, and the shower was really good. In terms of location, it was close to the Watkins Glen State Park which was where I was headed the next morning, so it was very convenient. Would definitely recommend!”
Emilie, August 2017

“The Local was great for my weekend visit to the finger lakes. I just needed a clean & safe place to crash without spending much money- this was perfect! Right in the middle of town, walking distance to the Seneca Pier and the state park. Ian was super helpful with pizza/ice cream tips and the dogs were so sweet. Will definitely stay again if I’m in the area. Thanks!!”

“A comfortable private room in the local hostel. Located in the heart of town. Convenient parking on the street. The hosts were very welcoming and maintain a very clean hostel premises. The washroom provided bathing supplies as well. They have 2 friendly big dogs.”
Havana, October 2017

“Emily and Ian were terrific hosts. The rooms were nice and clean. We had access to the kitchen to enjoy some coffee they had for us and our breakfast, which we brought. The hostel was right across the street from Watkins Glen State Park, which is stunning, and a 5 or 10 minute walk to restaurants. It was a good value. There are 2 dogs living there, and they were respectful of our space. There weren’t any windows in the room, but there was a fan and A/C that kept the room comfortable. We would gladly go back again.”
Richard, October 2017
