Here is what our guests have said about their Local Experience.

“OMG. True super hosts. We were exceptionally fortunate to get the single suite on the property. Could not have asked for better accommodations or top shelf service. A hidden gem in Watkins Glen. Emily and Ian go all out. I was kind of hesitant to post, as the world will find our secret hiding spot. Top notch all the way!!!”
Mags and Tim, July 2019

“Emily was very nice, she had made us feel like we were home! I could not believe that we only paid 33 dollar for each person. The bed was very comfortable, I slept really well. She had eggs and bread for customers for breakfast for free. I was able to cook some food and leave the left overs in the fridge while we were site seeing. This is our first times staying at a hostel and it was amazing. Our room mates were from canada and Lithuania and they were so nice and warm. We instantly clicked and became friends!”
Marzana, July 2019

“Cannot beat the location at all! A short walk to everything in town, as well as the Watkins Glen State Park and the lake. Overall a very convenient stay and would definitely stay there again if we’re visiting the area in the future.”
Mo, July 2019

“This is such a wonderful place. The owners are super gracious and the accommodations are perfect for an up-scale hostel.”
David, July 2019

“Great location with easy check in process! Right across the street from the state park with great walking trails. Within 10/15 minutes from tons of wine spots, with great recommendations from Emily. Also a tasty ice cream spot across the street :)”
Lauren, June 2019

“We extended our stay in the cottage two separate times. Emily’s communication was always fast, accommodating, and easy – what a breath of fresh air! The space is new, very clean, and comfortable. The stainless-lined electric kettle was so appreciated to start our days with tea/coffee without leaving the space. We enjoyed opening the windows for a nice cross breeze while relaxing at the end of the day. The cottage is in the middle of town and super convenient and walkable to everything. The gorge is a short block down and across the street. There’s parking on site, but watch out if your car has low clearance (you may need to park on 12th street). Be sure to bring your toiletries and a hairdryer. The cottage is an easy choice for a clean, private quaint stay in the downtown Watkins Glen. We’d love to stay again. Thanks, Emily!”
Dana, June 2019

“The location was perfect for my trip, just a couple of blocks away from Watkins Glen entry. Emily kindly accommodated my late arrival. Appreciated the cozy kitchen, selection of mugs and fruits in addition to other breakfast options! =D”

Stayed in a bunk room bed, mattresses where very comfortable. Emily and Ian where very accommodating and gracious. Beatrice and Emme had a great greeting upon entering and was welcomed us into their place. Thanks!”

Emily & Ian are very friendly hosts. The dogs were also both very friendly. Watkins Glen has alot of cool breweries/wineries, great places to eat. Brianna, April 2019

“Stayed in a bunk room in December. Great way to see the local area, especially in the off season. Beds are incredibly comfortable! Would take the mattress home if I could. Bathrooms and kitchen are extremely clean and accessible. Only facility piece lacking is a more robust common area. This wasn’t an impact as we were out and about exploring the whole time. Hosts are very welcoming and quick with communication. 10/10 would recommend. Will return next time I am in the area. Awesome overall experience!”
Ross, December 2018

“Really nice place to stay, Ian was friendly. Emme and Beatrice were really fun and great company!!”

“What a fun stay.
Ian and Emily are very gracious hosts. The dogs are hysterical and very friendly. We stayed in the private room with the double and bed and I slept like a rock on that mattress. The bathrooms were very clean. I will definitely stay there again.”
Nora, November 2018

“I stayed at The Local over this weekend and was sad to leave!! The owners, Ian and Emily, are absolutely amazing. They are some of the warmest and hospitable people I’ve ever met.
Coming from the Philadelphia area, I can be quiet picky and bougie in my personal taste, but The Local exceeded every single expectation. Everything was SO clean! The memory foam mattress was a dream and the microfiber sheets certainly kept me cozy during the snowy nights. To add to the already warm atmosphere, The Local is also home to two of the sweetest dogs – Emme and Beatrix. They are very well behaved, but love with all they have. 🙂
Thank you so much, Ian and Emily! I’m so looking forward to my next trip!!”
Becca, November 2018

“We love The Local Hostel! Sometimes when I’m in town on business I like to stay in one of several available bunk rooms. Last week we stayed in one of the private rooms, which was also great. There is free internet service, knowledgeable, friendly staff, even two cute dogs to visit with in the kitchen or den if you want to. The rooms and bathrooms are neat and clean, with simple and lovely furnishings. We like to recommend these unique accommodations and very reasonable rates, right near the State Park in Watkins Glen.”
Nancy, October 2018

“I’ve been going to Watkins Glen about three times per year for the past six years and have always struggled to find a clean, convenient and affordable place to stay….until i stumbled across The Local a few years back. Emily and Ian take pride in this place and it shows. They have always accommodated our group even when we had to check in at strange hours. The beds are very comfortable and everything, especially the bathrooms, are super clean. There is no other place I stay when visiting Watkins Glen.”
Haresh, August 2018

Jessica, May 2018

“The cottage is really close to everything in town. Shower in the main building was super clean. It is right next to a main thoroughfare, so unless you’re an early riser or you’re used to car noise, then just ask Emily or her husband for a pair of earplugs, which they have an abundance of. Also, her husband has a ton of solid recommendations for places to see and restaurants/bars/ice cream joints to stop by.”

“Emily and Ian were terrific hosts. The rooms were nice and clean. We had access to the kitchen to enjoy some coffee they had for us and our breakfast, which we brought. The hostel was right across the street from Watkins Glen State Park, which is stunning, and a 5 or 10 minute walk to restaurants. It was a good value. There are 2 dogs living there, and they were respectful of our space. There weren’t any windows in the room, but there was a fan and A/C that kept the room comfortable. We would gladly go back again.”

Location is great: walking distance to several restaurants and more. The hostel offers great accommodations for a great price. I highly recommend it.”

“I spent very little time here, just one night, but it was perfect for my needs. I had the smallest room with no window, but it didn’t bother me as I basically just needed a place to sleep. But the room was nice and clean, the bed comfy. The bathroom across the hall was big and clean, and the shower was really good. In terms of location, it was close to the Watkins Glen State Park which was where I was headed the next morning, so it was very convenient. Would definitely recommend!”

“This placecwas great. My mother and I stopped in on a road trip. We agreed the place felt more like a DIY bed and breakfast than a hostel. The kitchen was stocked, everything was clean and the man who checked us in was really helpful with local suggestions. Not to mention Watkins Glen state park was almost directly across the street. I heard there were waterfalls, but 1 mile of waterfalls was way beyond. We were very glad we stopped in here on our way.”

Definitely worth the visit.”

Never having stayed in a hostel, I wasn’t sure what to expect. The entire stay was great. Check-in was easy, they gave us tips on where to eat and showed us around the building. The room and bathrooms were both clean, and having BeBe(?) the Doberman around was nice. Definitely recommend this place if you need an inexpensive place to stay.”

“Staying at Emily’s place was a great moment of peace and quiet during some hectic travel. Emily was a great communicator and generous host. She gave me recommendations to places in town which were phenomenal! They are situated just across the street from Watkins Glen park for waterfall hikes. The hostel was run smoothly much like hostel I have experienced in Europe. At first, Emily was worried I wouldn’t want to sleep in a room without a window, but I have never had such restful sleep as I did in that room on the memory foam mattress! I would definitely come again. Thank you!!”
